Product overview

Understanding ER308L

ER308L is a low-carbon austenitic stainless filler classification generally associated with welding 304/304L-type stainless steels and related grades. Its low carbon level supports resistance to sensitization, but it is not a universal filler for every stainless or corrosive service.

Classification framework
AWS A5.9 ER308L
Welding process
GTAW / TIG, GMAW / MIG or SAW depending on product form
Product form
Low-carbon chromium-nickel stainless solid wire or rod

Typical application context

  • Fabrication and repair of compatible 18Cr-8Ni austenitic stainless-steel grades.
  • Food, general process, tank and equipment fabrication where the governing specification accepts ER308L.
  • Root, fill or automated applications using the appropriate wire or rod format and qualified process.

Key selection considerations

  • Exact base-metal grades, service temperature, corrosion environment and required ferrite range.
  • TIG or MIG process, shielding and backing gas, wire diameter and surface cleanliness.
  • Heat input, dilution, interpass temperature, procedure qualification and certificate requirements.

Selection factors

  • TIG or MIG process, wire diameter and packaging format.
  • Stainless base material and applicable welding standard.
  • Shielding gas, surface condition and production requirements.
  • Batch documents, test reports and expected repeat usage.

Manufacturer matching

KHANDU screens specialized manufacturers and supports customer testing so the selected ER308L product is evaluated in the customer's actual welding conditions.
